Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Center at Williams Hall

The Vision

At Columbia College, we believe that to remain a highly innovative institution of higher education, we must represent and embrace diversity and inclusion of all people. Diversity inspires new ideas, builds bridges, creates opportunities for personal and community growth and teaches lifelong lessons highlighting the value of all people.

The Commitment

With diversity, equity and inclusion comes the need for dedicated safe spaces for groups to meet, provide education and bring awareness. Columbia College has responded to this need with the creation of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Center at Williams Hall. In echoing the tenet of the college’s founders that relevant education must reflect social change, Columbia College’s commitment includes an effort to:

  • Provide quality programming via our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee
  • Serve as sponsors of community outreach events, such as being the charter sponsor of the Inclusive Impact Institute. It was our honor to be the location sponsor for the State of Inclusivity conference in 2019, and the virtual location sponsor in 2020.
  • Create and host the Columbia College Black Expo for each of the last three years
  • Partner with Student Affairs to bring A Night of Unity to the campus community
  • College support of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee initiatives

The Goals

After surveying our students, faculty and staff a need for dedicated space was made more evident. The below goals were set for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Center:

  • To promote systemic institutional changes that promote and foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture across the college and in the community
  • To advocate for and celebrate diverse voices through programming and events across the college and in the community
  • To engage in professional development to promote best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion at the college and in the community
  • To prepare a diverse body of students for the workforce
  • To provide a space for educational programming
  • To provide a space to host meetings associated with the mission of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
  • To provide a safe and intentional space for affinity groups to meet and connect
  • To have a space for our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee to call home
